Interventional Radiology / Biopsy

Minimally invasive, image-guided procedures — from precise tissue sampling to draining excess fluid — performed right here in Mt. Pleasant.

Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology uses real-time imaging to guide instruments through tiny incisions to diagnose and treat disease — often without the need for open surgery. MMRA was the first radiology group in our five-county region to offer these procedures.

Thoracentesis & Paracentesis

Thoracentesis and paracentesis are minimally invasive procedures that drain excess fluid from around the lungs or abdomen. Using image guidance, a thin needle or catheter is placed through the skin to safely remove the fluid buildup, relieving discomfort and helping diagnose the underlying cause.

Biopsy

A biopsy collects a small tissue sample through the skin using a thin needle, so it can be examined for disease. By guiding the needle with live imaging, our radiologists reach the exact target with pinpoint accuracy — no open surgery required.

Biopsies we perform

Thyroid biopsy

Identifies the cause of a nodule found in the thyroid gland.

Liver biopsy

Helps diagnose conditions including cancer, hepatitis C and cirrhosis.

Guidance methods

  • Ultrasound-guided — real-time ultrasound imaging directs the needle into the targeted tissue
  • X-ray-guided — X-ray imaging helps the radiologist position biopsy equipment at the target site

Why it matters

  • Accurate diagnosis — biopsies provide definitive identification of disease, especially cancer
  • Better treatment planning — a precise diagnosis lets your doctor build the right treatment strategy
  • Minimally invasive — a small needle sample through the skin, not open surgery
