Varithena® Foam Treatment

A nonsurgical injectable foam that collapses diseased veins and relieves symptoms — usually in under an hour.

What is Varithena®?

Varithena® is a prescription injectable foam (polidocanol) used to treat varicose veins caused by problems with the great saphenous vein (GSV), the large vein running along the inside of the leg.

How it works

Your doctor injects a small amount of foam directly into the diseased vein. The foam causes the vein to collapse, and blood flow shifts to healthy veins nearby. The procedure is nonsurgical, requires only local numbing, and typically takes less than an hour.

What it improves

Varithena® is shown to improve both vein appearance and the five hallmark symptoms of varicose veins:

  • Heaviness
  • Achiness
  • Swelling
  • Throbbing
  • Itching

Recovery

Most patients return to light activity the same day. Typical aftercare includes:

  • Keep bandages dry for 48 hours
  • Wear compression stockings for 2 weeks
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 1 week
  • Walk at least 10 minutes a day for a month, avoiding long periods of inactivity
How many treatments will I need? Some patients need only one session; others may need more depending on the number and size of veins being treated. We'll schedule a follow-up to check your progress.
